A very common question I often get from people and the best way to provide an answer is to first explain what it is and how it works! There are many brands out there however the most well known brand is “Botox” however you’ll hear the words “Xeomin” and “Dysport”, all of which are ‘neurotoxins’. They are all competing brands that essentially give you the same result.
The best way to think of Botox is a tool for preventative treatment of wrinkles. These products act to prevent the formation of fine lines, rather than remove them. That repetitive motion of the pulling on the skin, over many years, creates wrinkles and fine lines. In order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, Botox is used to weaken those facial muscles resulting in less pulling on the skin and fewer wrinkles.
People have been afraid of these ‘neurotoxins’ due to misguided editorials. Botox it the leader and has been used for over 40 years! It has been used to treat such medical conditions as migraines, muscle spasms, voice tremors, sweating to name a few. From these medical treatments, arose a discovery that it also can help with softening the skin’s aging process.
So the best response I always give patients when to start is “It depends”. The reason for my answer is everyone is different in the way they age. Most important factors of aging are genetics and amount of sun exposure. Hence, I tailor my recommendations to my patients specifically for them. Consistent use of Botox will continue to prevent those wrinkles and help you stay looking refreshed, less tired, and younger, longer. I always give ample time for patients and enjoy educating.
