Liposuction

During a liposuction procedure, unwanted body fat is removed from a specific area of the body, such as the buttocks, thighs, upper arms, abdomen, or back. While liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, it can provide dramatic improvements in body contours, helping patients achieve a thinner, shapelier physique.
At Renaissance Plastic Surgery in Troy, MI, liposuction is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic surgeries. Our board-certified plastic surgeons are trained in multiple liposuction techniques and take great care to tailor each patient’s fat removal treatment to his or her unique needs.

Why Should You Consider Liposuction?

You may consider liposuction for a number of reasons:

• You want to achieve a better-proportioned and slimmer body.
• You have tried other methods such as diets and exercise, but you still haven’t gotten the results you are looking for.
• You want visible results that can be seen almost immediately and will last for a long time.
• You are looking for localized fat reduction.

Which Areas Does Liposuction Target?

With the help of lipo, you can target unwanted fat in any of the following areas:

•  Thighs
•  Calves
•  Ankles
•  Chest

•  Neck
•  Chin
•  Upper Arms
•  Back

•  Abdomen
•  Buttocks
•  Love Handles
•  Flanks

What Is the Best Type of Liposuction?

The plastic surgeons at Renaissance Plastic Surgery are trained and experienced providers of tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), and power-assisted liposuction (PAL). Each lipo technique we offer has distinct advantages, allowing our surgeons to safely and effectively remove unwanted fat cells from nearly any problem area. The best type of liposuction for your needs can be determined during your initial consultation.
Tumescent Lipo

Tumescent liposuction involves the use of specialized microcannula and anesthetic solutions, which sets it apart from traditional liposuction. The word “tumescent” means swollen and firm. The tumescent solution used in this technique swells and firms fat cells in the targeted area, making removal easier.

Tumescent solution is composed of normal saline, diluted lidocaine, and epinephrine. Epinephrine constricts the capillaries to prevent bleeding and bruising. Lidocaine, a local anesthetic, safely numbs the region, making the procedure pain-free.
Tumescent liposuction minimizes discomfort during the healing process and leads to a shorter recovery period compared to traditional methods.

Ultrasonic Liposuction (VASER lipo)

VASER lipo is an ultrasound-assisted fat removal technique.  With UAL, ultrasound energy is used to liquify fat cells before they are extracted.

This technique causes less trauma to the surrounding tissues than traditional liposuction. UAL has the additional benefit of  skin retraction, helping to ensure smooth, firm contours.

MicroAire (PAL)

The main difference between MicroAire Power-Assisted Liposuction and traditional liposuction is the type of cannula used. Because MicroAire involves use of a high-tech, oscillating, motorized cannula, the fat removal process is much faster, easier, and more precise. Eliminating the need for manual manipulation of the cannula also helps to minimize damage to the surrounding tissue.

The Liposuction Procedure

To begin, the plastic surgeon will mark the treatment area(s), as needed, to indicate the optimal incision sites and other surgical details. He will answer any remaining questions you may have and review the procedure steps with you.

You will then be taken to the operating room, and anesthesia will be administered. The surgeon can then make the necessary incision(s) and prepare the fat cells for extraction using ultrasound energy, MicroAire, or tumescent fluid, per your treatment plan. A medical suction device will then be used to remove the unwanted fat via the cannula.

The Liposuction Recovery Process

Liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, which means an overnight stay in the hospital is not required. However, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home after your liposuction procedure due to mobility limitations and the effects of the anesthesia.

Once you get home, you will need to rest and take care to restrict your physical activity, as directed. Light activities, such as low intensity walks, will be approved after about a week. Your surgeon will monitor how the healing process progresses, so he can advise you when you can increase your activity levels and return to work.
Post-treatment bruising and swelling can be expected. Your surgeon will provide instructions regarding the use of over-the-counter and/or prescription medications you can take to mitigate discomfort.

You will need to wear a compression garment, as directed, to minimize swelling and help the skin conform to your new, thinner contours. It is also important that the treatment site(s) are not subjected to excessive pressure or abrasion while healing.

Liposuction Results

You can expect to see considerable improvements within about a month of your liposuction procedure. It may take up to three months to see your final results, as it can take several weeks for swelling to fully subside.

It is vital that you commit to regular exercise and follow a nutritious, calorically appropriate diet in order to maintain your slimmer figure. Liposuction permanently eliminates targeted fat cells, but the remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight after your procedure. Patients who adhere to healthy lifestyle habits can enjoy their enhanced look for many years.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The price of your liposuction procedure will be determined by the details of your specific case. The liposuction technique used, the size and number of areas being treated, and the amount of fatty tissue being removed can all affect the overall cost of liposuction. Combining liposuction with complementary procedures, such as a tummy tuck, will also impact the price of your surgery.

Patient Testimonials

This was the best decision I have ever made. I met with Dr. Stefani and hired him & received a full mommy makeover. I had met with several doctors as well, as this was a big decision to make. Dr. Stefani made me feel the most comfortable and he has a great bedside manner. Also, to be completely honest after surgery …He exceeded my expectations. I almost cried after I saw what I looked like after surgery. I had 3 c sections prior and nothing was ever the same after that. I feel better than I did before kids and I wish I did this sooner. If you are even slightly hesitant …don’t be! Dr. Stefani is AMAZING.

Dr. Williams is one of the most caring and talented doctors I have ever met! I was diagnosed with breast CA 2 years ago and was referred to him for reconstruction after choosing to do a bilateral mastectomy. Boy was I scared !! He put me at ease right away with great information on what to expect along and seemed to generally care about me even though we had just met! I knew I was in the best hands! Now after 2 years, not to sound weird, I get compliments on my "new" breasts all the time, even my family Dr gave them a big WOW! Cherry on top, he did a Tummy tuck on me to even out new look, and also get compliments all the time!

Dr. Miguel is the absolute best!! I've had rhinoplasty in the past with another surgeon, and I came in for a consultation with Dr. Miguel for an alar base reduction (narrowing of nostrils). He was so honest with his answer, and he told me it was not needed. He said the procedure was unnecessary, and to leave my nose just the way it is. He told me all the things that could go wrong if I were to go forward with this procedure. I am so grateful for his honesty, and I appreciate his conservative approach. If you are looking for a rhinoplasty surgeon and want honest feedback with natural results, please consult with Dr. Miguel.
